Charity Bootcamp For The Homeless – July 30th

Our Barnsley Barbell Bootcamps have been running for 1 full year! To show our gratitude for the support of local Barnsley people, we wanted to give back to the local community by running this charity bootcamp.

Homelessness is an issue in Barnsley. Fact. Thankfully we have the Barnsley Churches Drop-In Project (BCDP) to help. The BCDP runs a drop in centre for the homeless, addicted and impoverished in Barnsley, South Yorkshire. Volunteers provide hot meals, alongside donated clothing, toiletries and bedding.

With 15,913 meals served up last year, and now 130 meals being served in each session, it is clear that the BCDP is a very much needed service for the vulnerable individuals in the Barnsley community.

Got Any Old Clothes?

Got any old clothes that need clearing out?
If you have any old clothes, shoes, sleeping bags, flasks, towels, bedding, cupboard food or toiletries, please feel free to bring them along on the day as we’ll also be doing a huge collection.

Let’s Come Together To Help

Having visited the drop-in myself and volunteered for a few hours, you can soon begin to understand the issue at hand, and the sheer amount of people that need help. If we can all come together and donate old clothes, socks, shoes – even some tins of beans at the back of your cupboard – we can have a HUGE impact on the lives of these individuals.

More Information About The Organisation

Barnsley Churches Drop-In Project is a small local registered charity launched in April 2002 to provide  support and comfort to the homeless, addicted and impoverished. The project began after a young man died in a Church doorway from a drug overdose.

A need was recognised by the Churches in the town to help people sleeping rough, many with addiction problems.  Since their launch in 2002, they have seen a wider range of people in need of our help throughout the town, from homeless people, substance users, alcoholics, many on treatment programs, people in poverty and asylum seekers.

They open three times a week, Monday 10am-12pm, Thursday 12pm-5pm and Friday 12pm-2pm. Sessions are run by Volunteers, and one paid Coordinator.  At the sessions, volunteers provide a social eating space, a warm room where people come to find a hot meal, a hot drink, and a sandwich, yogurt and fruit to take away with them.  It’s a place where they are treated with respect, where they are listened to and not judged, where we can advise and signpost on for further help.  Often they have donated clothing, socks, hats, gloves, bedding, sleeping bags and toiletries to hand out. Each week the charity serves around 300 meals to people in much need of our help and they don’t turn anyone away.

The Outcome

Everyone visiting receives respect, food and warmth; they are well nourished, healthier and feel happier about themselves.  Each session many of their clients thank the volunteers for listening to them and for the warm meal that helps them on their way.  Each week the charity meet new clients who go to them for help getting back on their feet, a tent for someone living on a local trail, people so embarrassed to ask for help having once had a home and job.

Those just been housed without a blanket, or towel to dry their face, trying to choose between eating or heating.  People in all kinds of situations tell the charity of the need for their service and how lost and alone they would be without their help.

Want To Volunteer?

Volunteers are always welcomed, and play a huge part in the running of the charity. To volunteer, contact the BCDI Project on their Facebook page, here. Alternatively, you can send us a message and we will be happy to put you in touch with them.
